Benefits of exercise in people with cancer
No CommentsCancer patients can benefit greatly from regular exercise programs of cancer, although many have limitations due to disease or the treatment they receive.
In these cases influenced by stage of disease that are, if they are receiving active treatment, treatment for metastatic disease or are in remission.
To date there are few studies on the parameters of duration, intensity and frequency of exercise best for patients with cancer. The principles of exercise prescription should be used similarly in these patients, while taking care to meet the individual limitations.
It was found that there is a dose-response relationship with fatigue and lack of energy in these patients. That is, they endure longer sessions (more than 15-20 minutes) feel less fatigue and tiredness that can not reach those levels.
There is also evidence to suggest that starting in selected patients with shorter sessions (10 minutes) is valid and allows the patient to get used to exercise until you can lead to higher levels and longer sessions.
Although not determined the frequency, duration and intensity of exercise best for cancer patients, studies have confirmed that they respond to exercise and may receive the following benefits:
• Improved fitness.
• Decreased emotional state alterations.
• Increased muscle strength and endurance.
• Increased efficiency and self-sufficiency, better able to function independently. In patients receiving active treatment is necessary to assess their health status before each workout and accommodate the meeting or postpone it, as is the patient. For example, patients with vomiting or diarrhea, fever, or neutropenia, should postpone the exercises.
Patients with low platelet count should also take precautions to prevent injuries, especially head injuries. Low hemoglobin levels imply that exercise intensity must be kept very low, until the hemoglobin rise at least above 10gm/dL.
Finally, the exercise prescription should be changing with changes in the patient, ideally, always out to higher volumes and higher intensities of exercise, but may be the case that they need to decrease.
